Charcot, Jean
(1867-1936)
   scholar, explorer
Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Jean Charcot was the son of the noted physician jean-martin Charcot. After having studied medicine, he turned to oceanography and, in the course of two expeditions to the Antarctic on board the Français and then the Pourquoi-Pas? (1903-05, 1908-10), he charted the austral region of the palmer archipelago to the island that now bears his name. From 1912 to 1936, he made a number of expeditions in the Atlantic, the English Channel, and the North Sea (the Hebrides, 1921; Greenland, 1925-26), pursuing his work in oceanography and hydrography. During his final expedition, Charcot died at sea.
